Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is thought of as a vital attribute of any future employee, but is it more important than IQ?
According to the Forbes Business Council, 71% of hiring managers said they value high Emotional Intelligence over a high IQ and when asked why, they cited the ability to stay calm under pressure, lead by example and make more thoughtful business decisions.
The term has been popularised in recent years with EQ being hailed as the key to life and it seems those who possess a high-level of Emotional Intelligence have an advantage over those who do not in the screening process.
EQs four pillars of self-awareness, self-regulation, internal motivation and empathy home qualities such as recognising your own strengths or weaknesses, not taking offence to criticism, expressing feelings maturely, controlling impulses, pursuing personal goals and responding to the needs of others.
In the workplace, it seems clear why a candidate possessing these qualities would be the ideal employee but are they best suited for a role due to their high-level of Emotional Intelligence or does IQ reign as the most important factor?
I’m keen to hear your views on the matter. Get in touch - what do you think is more important, EQ or IQ?
