Is the need for relevant sector experience a thing of the past?

Posting date: 08 Mar 2019

Incredible companies need incredible people, it’s as simple as that. Or is it?

So often we see the most exquisite of finance professionals put forward for the very best jobs out there and despite being absolutely perfect for the role in terms of prior achievements, skill-set and culture fit – they’re turned down, and it’s always because of their lack of industry sector experience.

It’s frustrating for us but most importantly, disheartening for the professionals who despite being the very highest grade of candidate, get turned away from their dream role for career diversity – something that in my opinion – is a fantastic attribute to have.

Recently however I’m beginning to think the need for this relevant sector-experience is a thing of the past. We produced a white paper on this very topic and explored the career journeys of two CFOs on their quest for career diversity, we also spoke to a senior HR professional who believes ignoring so is an element of unconscious bias.

These stories reinvested my faith in the ability of high-grade finance professionals to transition into different industries but I’d be keen to hear your thoughts and see if you feel the same.

Please do get in touch or download a copy of our white paper and join the conversation – is the need for relevant sector experience a thing of the past?
