Does the ‘North/South Divide’ affect Career Diversity?

Posting date: 14 Aug 2019

As a recruiter, I am a huge advocate of Career Diversity. Changing industry, sector and environment, breaking the status quo and following your passion rather than conforming to expectation and making sure you enjoy what you do – day in, day out.

But, while we are all able to make the change, follow our heart and take the plunge into an entirely new work environment, do we really want to?

Having worked in the recruitment industry across the UK, I have noticed some interesting trends within Career Diversity, that seem to massively differ depending on region.

In Scotland for instance, I think professionals put loyalty above all and have perhaps more of an attachment to their company or colleagues than in the South.  I also feel that job security plays a huge part in this. That and job availability.

People are far more risk-averse in places like Scotland and I believe that the Financial Services Sector, as an example, would benefit massively from a change.

Professionals tend to stay in the same role within the same organisation for some 15-20 years and then struggle to do anything else. If they were to move between organisations every two to three years for career growth, like many Finance folk in London do, they may benefit hugely, especially from a leadership point of view.

I am keen to speak to my network across the UK to see if you have also seen a difference in the way we approach Career Diversity. Is there really a change in the way we perceive risk, change and diversity across UK regions? Perhaps there is a way of meeting in the middle.
